Focus Area: Southeast Asia

Participant:

School:

Framingham High School, Framingham, MA

Project Description:

Grade Level: High School

Expected Implementation Period: ongoing

Project Outcomes:

To assess and develop the library’s Southeast Asia collection:

·         Evaluate existing materials to determine which areas are under represented, and determine if more materials are needed in these areas.

·         Weed materials deemed inappropriate.

·         Create a wish list of new materials for purchase as funds allow.

Proposed Project:

As a school librarian, one of my professional responsibilities is to support the school’s curriculum by providing appropriate resources for students and staff. This process is known as collection assessment and development. In this particular instance, my goal is to maintain up-to-date resources and add additional resources on Southeast Asia.

I will examine every book in the collection relating to Southeast Asia and decide if it is worthy of retaining. To expedite this process I have done keyword searches on Asia and the individual countries of Southeast Asia. The results have been compiled into a forty-two page document which is the keystone of my project.

After assessing each of these materials, I will create a list of materials that will be removed from the collection and a “wish list” of new materials to be purchased.  The stipend provided by the East-West Center provided a jump-start to achieving this goal, by allowing me to purchase several new books that have been added to the collection.
