Project Description :

Grade Level: Middle School

Subject Area: Social Studies

Expected Implementation Period: August to November 2004

Learning Outcomes:

What do I hope to achieve? While there is uncertainty within the Vietnamese government as to how to take the economy forward, especially in relation to foreign involvement, it seems that the pendulum is swinging more to the side of those who believe that a strong financial economy contributes to the overall good of the Vietnamese people.  Since my undergraduate degree is in Business Administration and Psychology and my graduate degree is an MBA, my interest was in the economics of Vietnam.  That is why I choose to present this topic.

Proposed Project:

Professional development presentation

As department chairperson for Social Studies at Teague Middle School, I will be giving three in-service presentations to our 18 department members. This will also include any other faculty and staff members who wish to join us. In addition, gifted and advanced students who are of Asian background will be invited along with their parents. Administrators will be present. Our school population is 1,736 students representing over 40 countries.

In addition, an informal presentation and question-and-answer session will be given at the next monthly Seminole County Middle School Chairpersons meeting in November. This will include many pictures, books, brochures, items purchased, etc. This will include an overview of my travels.

Proposed presentation - Vietnam's economy: The transitional stage
The main topic to be presented will be the economy of Vietnam: past, now (as I saw it), and the future.

  • Economy past - tightly controlled by the Communist government, post-war;
  • Economy as I experienced it – I will discuss what many Americans perceive the economy to be like, and how this differs from the economy as I experienced it. With 70% of the population being under the age of 30, changes will have to be made regarding jobs for new entrants into the labor market. People in Vietnam today experience poor living conditions and poverty. Vietnam has the potential to be a major tourist arena, but fear and lack of understanding of the government and people prevent this. I will greatly expand on this with visuals during a power point presentation. This will be titled "From My View";
  • Future possibilities - Change comes slow, but it is happening with the Vietnamese government. In the past five years, they have simplified the business system, placed an emphasis on poverty reduction, loosened trading rights, and made state-owned banking reforms. In 1995, Vietnam acquired access to the European Trade Market. Also, they may eventually have access to the World Trade Organization. I will expand on this by addressing the countries that now have factories in Vietnam and interviews I had with the Vietnamese people about how they feel about how they are treated as workers in factories owned by other countries. This was a major surprise to me.
