Expected Implementation Period: November 15-16, 2004.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyze/interpret poster art from Vietnam;
  • Identify social and political issues illustrated through social realism;
  • Research and collect information on a single country’s current political, social and economic issues;
  • Illustrate idea within the framework of social realism to affect change on the issue researched.

 

Proposed Project:

Curriculum Framing Questions:

Essential Question: How is change affected?

Unit Questions:

  • What social and political issues today present opportunities for change in S. E. Asia?
  • How has social realism been used to affect change?
    Content Questions:
    • What is social realism?
    • What can we learn about issues and changes in Vietnam today by studying currnet social realism posters?

 

Materials:

·         Computers

·         Video camera

·         10 Photographs of poster art in Vietnam

Procedure:

Day 1

1.      Identify and define the term “social realism” within a historical context referencing its use from the Vietnam War era to modern day.

2.      Review photographs of current posters in Vietnam as examples of social realism today.

3.      Assign small groups completion of the analysis worksheet for each of three or ffour photographs to infer the message conveyed.

4.      Ask each group to share their analysis of the same poster following up with the literal translations provided from the text.

5.      Write the significant words from the poster on the board (see underlined).

6.      Lead a class discussion about the words with the following questions:

1.      What reaction do you have to those words?

2.      How would you react if the words came from the government? Why?

3.      Would these words be interpreted differently from citizens in a Communist Government?

Day 2

1.      Repeat the same process in Day 1 for the remaining set of three or four photographs.

2.      Engage the group in a continual discussion focused on the effectiveness of using this art form to communicate societal change in Vietnam.

Extensions:

  1. Independent research and study of other countries in Southeast Asia to identify important issues supporting the potential for change.
  2. Design a poster using elements of Social Realism to affect change in one of these areas.
  3. Compare and contrast posters focusing on one country to identify an accurate representation of the government perspective from that country.
  4. Compare and contrast posters of similar issues to identify the interrelatedness of issues faced by the countries in Southeast Asia.
