"Schools-Helping-Schools" was developed by the East-West Center's AsiaPacificEd Program in response to the crisis caused by the December 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, and the damage caused to schools in the Asia-Pacific region. Since 2005, U.S. partner schools have raised over $80,000 to support projects in Tsunami-affected communities in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. School-to-school initiatives developed as a result have included letter and project exchanges and teacher visits (with Indonesian teachers visiting their U.S. sponsor schools as part of an EWC program and U.S. teachers visiting their SHS partner schools in Thailand as part of the EWC travel-study program for U.S. teachers). Click here to learn about the Tsunami-related projects in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. A new SHS Cambodia Initiative, launched in January 2008, provides U.S. schools, communities, and individuals with opportunities to work with and support children, young people, and families in need in Cambodia. Accountability Administrative costs for Schools-Helping-Schools are born entirely by the East-West Center, allowing 100% of the amount donated to directly contribute to our partner schools and their communities in Asia. Each school/project we fund is supported by a responsible local community member who provides oversight for how the funds are spent.
