Program Information

Teaching for meaning and relevance is at the heart of this Institute, hosted at the East-West Center in Honolulu. Activities include presentations and discussions on content and pedagogy, lesson demonstrations, technology training, and curriculum development sessions in cohort groups using Southeast Asia materials. Field trips to sites in Honolulu further enhance the experience.

Program Cost
Cost is $500 and includes lodging, all weekday meals, field trip travel, free computer and Internet access, group photos, and institute materials.

Eligibility
Open to full-time classroom teachers in grades 3-12 in any discipline in the United States as well as teachers from the Asia Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand.

Additional Benefits
Each participant will receive approximately $100 worth of resources, including CDs of primary source materials, and is also eligible for a $200 grant to develop standards-aligned curricular units. Graduate credits may be obtained for an additional fee. Institute alumni from outside Oahu (HI) can apply for a $400 travel grant ($150 for Hawaii's neighbor island teachers) plus free lodging in Honolulu to share their institute-inspired lessons and project activities with new program participants.

Two or more teachers from the same school/district participating in any program combination will each receive a $100 discount.
