Visitor Information

The East-West Center is adjacent to the University of Hawai’i in Honolulu. It is approximately eight miles from the Honolulu International Airport, and three miles from Waikiki. The Center’s 21-acre campus includes conference facilities, a research and administration office building and three residential halls.

East-West Center Special Features:

  • East-West Center Gallery – Located on the first floor of East-West Center's administrative office building John A. Burns Hall, the gallery features exhibitions of art and other cultural manifestations of the region;
  • Japanese Garden – Located behind the Hawaii Imin International Conference Center, this serene garden was the gift of a group of Japanese businessmen and the result of a 1963 East-West Center project on landscape architecture that involved specialists from Asia, the Pacific and the United States;
  • Japanese Teahouse – Traditional tea ceremonies are periodically held at the teahouse, overlooking the Japanese Garden;
  • Thai Pavilion – The pavilion, or sala, was a gift from King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand who dedicated the structure in 1967.

Getting To the East-West Center:

  • By taxi: Tell the taxi driver to take you to the East-West Center located on the University of Hawaii campus (approximate cost for taxi ride from Airport to East-West Center is $20-$30).
  • By car: As you enter the University of Hawaii campus on East-West Road, the East-West Center is on your right, starting with the administrative building John A. Burns Hall, Hale Halawai, Hale Manoa, Hawaii Imin International Conference Center, Hale Kuahine and Lincoln Hall.
