The Program
In this institute, educators from Indonesia and southern Thailand will travel to Hawaii and to U.S. mainland schools to work with their U.S. counterparts in workshops and through school visits and homestays to share “best practices” and to learn about each others’ communities and cultures. In week one, two U.S. teachers from each American host school will attend the first few days of the program to work with visiting Asian teachers on teaching strategies aimed at helping learners in heterogeneous classrooms develop and apply skills in literacy, critical thinking, global awareness, and learning across cultures. In week two, Asian teachers will visit U.S. schools to observe “best practices” in action. In week three, Asian teachers will return to Honolulu to develop a plan to share their newfound knowledge with their colleagues at home.
Thanks to funds provided by the U.S. government, all major costs associated with program participation by both Asian and American educators will be covered. Asian participants must obtain their own passports. U.S. schools interested in hosting Asian teachers should contact the East-West Center. U.S. schools selected to host Asian teachers will receive a $2,000 grant to help defray costs associated with the teachers’ visits.
This program is open to full-time elementary and secondary school educators from Indonesia and southern Thailand teaching in schools with a large Muslim student population. U.S. host schools must be affiliated with AsiaPacificEd alumni teachers. Each host school will determine which two of their educators will represent the school at the program in Honolulu.
