2007 Institute on Korean
Culture and Society

Institute Description

The 2007 Institute on Korean Culture and Society marks the fourth in a series of Korea-focused institutes that the East-West Center has offered. With Korea Foundation funding, the first Korean Culture and Society Summer Institute was hosted in 1997; three subsequent institutes in this series have been hosted in the summers of 2000, 2002, and 2004. As with the 2004 Institute, this summer’s program is sponsored jointly by the Korea Foundation, the Freeman Foundation, and the East-West Center.

The 2007 program runs from May 28-June 15, and includes one week of lectures at the East-West Center in Honolulu on Korean history, literature, religion, politics and film, and two weeks of field study in Seoul and other cultural sites throughout South Korea. Throughout the institute, particular attention is given to placing Korea in dynamic interaction with its neighbors in East Asia.
